Natural Resources Manager I (Oʻahu)

Job Summary:

Manages implementation efforts for natural resources management plans and projects to achieve strategic and operational goals. Provides analysis support to the division and oversees assigned natural resources assets within Kamehameha Schools’ (KS) portfolio of agricultural and conservation lands. Conducts detailed due diligence and negotiates routine land use and resource management agreements, monitors and evaluates compliance management, assesses and manages property-level risks, analyzes resource integrity and condition, reports asset-level operating activities, and establishes and maintains relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Serves as a subject matter expert on natural resources, an on-the-ground link between KS and its natural resources assets, and works across Community Engagement & Resources (CE&R) Departments to achieve operational, regional and strategic outcomes related to the stewardship of land and resources.

Essential Responsibilities:

Strategy Development & Integration

  • Understands issues impacting assets or resources under their management, reviews scenario alternatives and recommends sources of action to Senior Managers and Directors in support of their strategy development efforts.

Implementation, Operations, & Management

  • Performs critical implementation efforts for divisional plans on assigned resource assets.
     
  • Monitors performance metrics over time and revises implementation tasks as needed for assigned resource assets.
     
  • Independently negotiates routine land use and resource management agreements.
     
  • Performs relevant due diligence for property- and collaborator- level transactions.
     
  • Evaluates activities and contract compliance of lessees, contractors, vendors and stakeholders.
     
  • Observes and identifies property-level legal, environmental, community and financial risk.
     
  • Assesses compliance with plans, permits and other compliance requirements.
     
  • Performs temporary supervisory responsibilities, including interns or certain staff on discrete projects, as assigned.

Accountability & Reporting

  • Reports asset-, programmatic- and resource-level financial and operating activities, including operating budgets, variances, trend analysis, cost control, expenditures and progress toward plan goals.
     
  • Reports property-level risk and compliance management programs and activities.

Communications & Strategic Alliances

  • Communicates and collaborates with other CE&R and KS staff on status of projects, plans, investments and programs.
     
  • Attends internal and external meetings and represents KS’ interests on resource-related issues at external meetings.
     
  • Actively participates and promotes teamwork and open discussion of issues.
     
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with external stakeholders including tenants, collaborators, vendors and community groups.
     
  • Acts as on-the-ground link between KS and external stakeholders and recommends courses of action to Senior Managers and Directors in their stakeholder management efforts.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Land Planning, Natural Sciences, Natural Resource and Environmental Management, Hawaiian/ Pacific Island Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Business, Finance, Real Estate, Hydrology, Engineering or closely related field
     
  • Minimum 2 years of directly related work experience
     
  • Understanding of factors that impact portfolio-level plans, their execution and the balance of KS’ five values, including:
    • Resource management issues, trends and opportunities;
       
    • Traditional land use and cultural relationships with land and the natural environment; and
       
    • Environmental and resource stewardship practices.
       
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory processes governing land and resource management.
     
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including presentations, oral communication and writing.
     
  • Ability to negotiate routine agreements.
     
  • Ability to synthesize information from various sources for onward reporting.
     
  • Ability to work with external parties (government agencies, land owners, strategic partners, etc.) to develop and execute educational, cultural, environmental and community programs.
     
  • Familiarity with Native Hawaiian communities, agencies and organizations and ability to work effectively with local communities.
     
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, language and practices.
     
  • Must be able to travel to offsite locations on island and within the state as needed.
     
  • Current and valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with property management software and GIS.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
     
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
     
  • Ability to hike to remote areas.

 

Working Conditions:

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
     
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
     
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
