As a Commissioned Ranger, you will be responsible for performing law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of national park resources. Duties include:

  • Perform law enforcement throughout the park (e.g. road patrols, traffic enforcement, boundary integrity, hunting patrols, etc). Proactively prevent damage to park resources.
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents and issue citations.
  • Respond to emergency calls and takes initial actions necessary to preserve the peace, resolve problems, protect visitors and resources, approach violators, and ensure compliance with regulatory and administrative requirements.
  • Gain compliance with laws and regulations by using a continuum of techniques extending from verbal or written warnings through citations and physical custody arrests.
  • Enforce fish and game regulations, permit requirements and restrictions, and public use limitations or restrictions.
  • Pursue and apprehend violators, subdue unruly, violent, or disruptive individuals.
  • Intervene appropriately to limit, prevent, resolve or defuse potential violent disputes or confrontations, including those involving family members, concessionaire employees, public disputes, and other conflict situations.
  • Assist in monitoring activities of concessionaires, special permit holders, right of way grantees, and commercial use licensees to ensure operating as authorized and in compliance with terms of their contracts, permits, and licenses.
  • Serve as member of all-risk operations.
  • Inform visitors about park facilities and resources.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Occasional travel - Overnight travel may be required 1 - 5 nights per month.

 

Conditions of Employment

 

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • Must possess a Type II or higher Law Enforcement Commission.
  • New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.
  • Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency.
  • Selectee(s) must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home 1 - 5. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Required Documents

The following documents are required and must be submitted by 11:59 PM (EST) on 06/13/2019.

  1. Resume which includes a list of all significant jobs held and duties performed, with dates specified in month and year format; and, indicate hours worked per week. If military or civilian, please include your rank and/or grade.
  2. A complete Occupational Questionnaire
  3. Merit Promotion Eligibility Documentation such as:
    • Federal employees must submit a copy of their latest SF-50 "Notification of Personnel Action" that reflects career or career-conditional tenure showing position title, series, grade and tenure (please do not submit an Award SF-50 as it does not provide the needed information) and, if different, an SF-50 showing highest permanent grade ever held or you may not be considered under the merit promotion process.
    • Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, which includes ALL Appointment AND Termination SF-50s for EACH appointment as well as ALL performance evaluations, for each qualifying period of temporary employment claimed.
  4. Other Supporting Documents, if applicable, such as:
    • Performance Appraisals and Awards:
      • All applicants must submit their most recent performance appraisal showing the official rating of record and signed by a supervisor or, if one is unavailable, a statement as to why it is not available (including if any prior performance appraisals/evaluations were at an acceptable level).
      • Failure to submit any of the above mentioned required documents will result in loss of consideration due to an incomplete application package. It is your responsibility to ensure all required documents have been submitted.
  5. Documentation that you meet Selective Factors.
  6. College transcripts, if qualifying based on education.
  7. Documentation for Career Transition Assistance Plan consideration if you are a displaced Federal employee within the local commuting area. You must include: 1) Proof you are a displaced Federal employee, e.g., RIF Separation Notice, Notice of Proposed Removal, etc; 2) SF-50s (Notifications of Personnel Action) showing career/conditional tenure competitive status, promotion potential and duty location; and 3) your most recent performance appraisal. To exercise selection priority, displaced or surplus Federal employees must be rated well-qualified or above 85 on the rating criteria for this position.
