Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,509/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Works with the Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) to support marine ecosystem research and conservation efforts, including surveys of fish invertebrates, marine debris, and oceanographic conditions.  Participates in marine ecosystem surveys to assess and monitor trends in pelagic ecosystems in the Hawaiian Islands. Assists with most operational phases of the program to support this research, including field surveys, sample processing, and analysis. Works with the Principal Investigators to process, analyze, and summarize data from various oceanographic research surveys. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Zoology, Biology, Ecosystem Science, Oceanography, or related field involving studies of marine science or pelagic ecosystems.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience with marine research projects, which included working with scientific data, report writing, and marine survey techniques.  Experience processing plankton and nekton using dissecting microscopes.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Working knowledge of at least one (1) of the following areas: oceanographic processes, larval fish taxonomy, planktonic invertebrate taxonomy, micronekton taxonomy, planktonic ecology, or pelagic ecology.  Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location.  Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.  Must possess good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions on matters, including repetitive tasks involving the use of computers and dissecting microscopes.  Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision.  Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools, including word processors, spreadsheets, and Microsoft PowerPoint.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete the NOAA Laboratory Safety training within one (1) month from date of hire.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to work long hours aboard research vessels and aboard small boats (15-20’) in coastal and oceanic waters.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of gear and equipment unassisted. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).
