OISC Field Supervisor

OISC FIELD SUPERVISOR Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Oahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC), located in Kailua, Oahu. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,000. Job ID# 14138.

DUTIES: Directs field operations necessary to implement action plans into appropriate on-the-ground accomplishments. Supervises, trains, and works in the field with a field crew and/or volunteers to target invasive alien plant and/or animal species for control or eradication on Oahu. Responsible for scheduling and implementing field work. Plans site control strategies, makes contact with residents at targeted locations, and leads the crew’s control efforts. Uses hand tools and portable pesticide applicators in field control efforts. Keeps precise daily records of all field efforts. Prepares progress reports and submits all data and findings in a timely fashion. Public or residential contact will be required to schedule access and to maintain positive relations with landowners. Ensures strict adherence by entire field crew team to established protocols for preventing the spread of invasive species. Follows and adheres to all safety and operational guidelines and ensures crew compliance. Tracks inventory, supplies and equipment needs, and maintains equipment used.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years (achieved at least 48 credit hours) of college level coursework. EXPERIENCE: Two to four (2-4) years of experience in field activities relating to invasive species control and/or natural resources management. One to two (1-2) years of leadership or supervisory experience. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawaii. Knowledge of field techniques to control alien species and ability to train others. Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, state Tax Map Keys (TMKs), and aerial photographs. Ability to use a compass, altimeter, GPS unit, and other navigational tools. Ability to write clear and concise reports. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment, and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Ability to work with small mechanized equipment (chain saws, etc.). Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain State of Hawaii Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). If selected for rappelling for firefighting logistics and mop up activities must complete training and be approved by RCUH/PCSU. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to work outdoors on extremely rough terrain and under adverse weather conditions. Able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Botany, Resource Management, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Experience with control of invasive species in Hawaii; with pesticides; computer literacy; and specific knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna. Ability to use geographic information systems and databases to organize and analyze spatial data.
