The Invasive Seaweed Removal Project is a 5-month project to improve the aquatic environment of Heʻeia Fishpond through the removal of several species of invasive seaweed. The Removal Technician participates in all the field operations related to the removal, survey, maintenance, and documentation of the removal efforts. The Removal Technician will report directly to the Removal Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In-water removal of invasive seaweed with the sucker pumps.
  • Sort, bag, and dispose of invasive seaweed once cleared.
  • Properly document daily location and removal totals.
  • Maintain vessels, tools, and equipment as required for seaweed removal.
  • Maintain proper records of maintenance and other daily activities.
  • Work and communicate effectively with POH staff, community members, visitors, and all other partners.
  • Participate in POH staff meetings and activities when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively about the project with volunteers and visitors.
  • Give presentations about the project to groups and/or the public when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and two years of related work experience (Substitute: four years of work experience).
  • Experience recognizing native and invasive aquatic animal and plant species of Hawaiʻi.
  • Experience operating small boats, vehicles, and/or equipment such as small engines, hand tools, etc. in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to perform physical work sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work well with others and follow instructions from colleagues.
