Location of Opportunity
DUTIES: Plans and leads botanical surveys to locate invasive plant species in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Working individually or in groups of up to ten (10), provides safety and operations briefings, and sets work pace. Utilizes survey tools, including a global positioning system (GPS), compass, and field maps to identify search areas and ensure thorough survey coverage. Accurately records all survey findings and workloads in field journal and data sheets. Applies a range of manual and chemical control methods to safely treat invasive plant species. Records accurate field data and enters data into databases, and designs and implements field surveys. Produces summaries of work efforts and outcomes. Assists with other vegetation projects.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Geography, Biology, or related field.
EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of work experience in botanical surveys and invasive plant control, which includes experience in tracking and analyzing invasive plant control operations, forest pathogen mapping, and management activities.
ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native and alien Hawaiian flora. Knowledge of herbicide mixing, use, and safety. Ability to use and navigate with a compass, GPS, and map. Ability to communicate well orally and in writing with supervisor and coworkers. Ability to accurately record biological and botanical data. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. If selected for use of chainsaws, must complete chainsaw training certification prior to activity.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Able to backpack, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, Biology, or related field. Field experience working in Hawaiian Ecosystems. Experience in gathering data and navigating with a GPS. Experience in collecting forest health and pathogen data.
