KMWP COMMUNITY OUTREACH LIAISON – ID# 19242. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Ko‘olau Mountains Watershed Partnership (KMWP), located in Pearl City, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,649-$4,918/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Leads public education and outreach efforts, working closely with KMWP Operations Supervisor to raise public awareness of natural resources management issues on Oahu. Develops content and curriculum for classroom presentations on natural resource management and watershed protection programs.  Conducts school and private group outreach talks, develops cultural and biological talking points for public events, develops displays and outreach materials, organizes and leads public and private volunteer trips, and encourages favorable public relations of KMWP natural resource objectives.  Interacts with KMWP landowners, media, community organizations, volunteers, civic leaders, and local cultural and community groups.  Assists KMWP Operations Supervisor as needed in working with funding agencies to identify and obtain financial support for projects.  Assists in the preparation of reports, and prepares publications, press releases, and other public outreach documents.  Obtains information on plants and land access, and ensures information is filed in the project records/database. Performs other duties as assigned, including office management support as requested by the KMWP Operations Supervisor. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience in an active research, public outreach, or resource management program (e.g., public relations, education, general administrative, interagency coordination, community outreach, cultural education, or other related experience) aimed at protection of Hawai‘i’s ecosystems or culture.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.  Knowledge of basic methods to document a natural resource-related project.  Knowledge of Hawaiian tradition and cultural practices.  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.  Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet computer applications, Internet use, and aptitude to learn ArcView Geographic Information System (GIS) software applications.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission.  Ability to work on weekends, volunteer, attend public events, and camp overnight occasionally.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to hike in steep and rough terrain with a 20-pound backpack and conduct restoration work. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Familiar with biological principles and resources pertaining to Hawaiian ecosystems and alien/invasive species.  Knowledge and experience with PCSU or RCUH policies and procedures.  Experience working in an office to support and promote biological field activities.
