SSRI DATABASE ASSOCIATE – ID# 19237.  Social Science Research Institute.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI). Primary work location will be at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $4,167-$4,833/Mon. 

DUTIES: Confirms database requirements by studying user needs and conferring with leads from various programs. Analyzes databases and monitors design specifications for possible integration between certain projects. Maintains various database environments. Identifies and resolves all problems and ensures appropriate tracking of issues. Analyzes database statistics and security; recommends changes if required. Recommends improvements to the database structure, data entry portal, analytical queries, and summary reports. Identifies and analyzes data collection tools employed. Examines current data usage and, in consultation with DOFAW, makes recommendations. Participates in field activities to observe how data is collected, ensure the data is accurate and optimal, and to suggest improvements. Develops methodologies and technologies to help DOFAW programs better collect and integrate their spatial and statistical databases statewide. Researches and evaluates new data gathering equipment and technology to meet geographic information system (GIS)/database objectives and improves data management efficiency. Evaluates and improves data entry efficiency and quality by both individuals and projects. Facilitates conversations on data entry security. Integrates existing GIS efforts into the database. Trains DOFAW staff on electronic database entry, security, and use. Manages, monitors, and assists with resolving queries, and provides data extraction techniques.  Collaborates with leads from various programs. Compiles, writes, and prepares reports for various databases. Maintains user reference by writing and rewriting database descriptions. Maintains data dictionary by revising and entering definitions. Weekend and after-hours travel or meetings may be required.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field. 

EXPERIENCE:  Three to five (3-5) years of responsible work experience related to database management systems and programming. Work experience must include Microsoft Access Database software, visual basic and structured query language (SQL) database programming, electronic cloud storage, and spreadsheet software. Experience with ArcGIS mapping software to administer extensive and complex databases. Experience overseeing and implementing measures to ensure data security and quality control. 

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Extensive knowledge of database software and computer hardware. Extensive knowledge of database applications and map production. Strong knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories related to GIS, database management and security, and data quality control. Extensive knowledge of Python and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Strong knowledge of Microsoft Access software, visual basic and SQL database programming, electronic cloud storage, and spreadsheet software. Familiar with research methodologies and practices, simple vector analysis, and spatial modeling. Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biological resources and efficient backup recovery process for various databases. Excellent ability to manage program databases. Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated proficiency with highly detailed work.  Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, flexible environment. Ability to work around and fly in approved helicopters. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike up to five (5) miles per day in rugged terrain and lift up to 35 pounds unassisted. Ability to travel to the neighbor islands (including using car rentals) for meetings at short notice as needed.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Certification in Microsoft Access database development and Microsoft Transact-SQL. Experience utilizing data collection hardware and software in a field setting.
