We seek someone to serve as the Program Coordinator for the Hawai‘i Landscape-scale Mosquito Control Program.

This program is evaluating the potential for the Incompatible Insect Technique to be safely used to suppress mosquito populations at a landscape-scale in Hawai‘i. The program’s goal is to advance this technology to protect Hawai‘i’s native forest birds from deadly diseases transmitted by introduced mosquitoes; this approach could also potentially be applied to protect human health by stopping mosquito transmission of diseases such as dengue fever and Zika. A broad coalition of entities is working on this issue and the Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining communication among these groups/individuals and making sure the key steps are progressing as planned. A critical role for the coordinator will include managing the regulatory and permitting processes associated with each step of the project. The Program Coordinator will report to the Hawai‘i Program Director at American Bird Conservancy and work primarily with the Steering Committee for Landscape-scale Mosquito Control.

 

Coordinating Duties (primary responsibilities):

  1. Coordinate the Steering Committee’s and broader coalition’s activities:
    1. Implement efficient project management: develop project benchmarks and Gantt chart to track coalition’s activities and timelines
    2. Ensure tasks are accomplished in a timely manner
    3. Organize and facilitate regular meetings of Steering Committee; take and distribute minutes
    4. Provide regular updates on progress of all project components to partners
  2. Identify and pursue required permits at federal, state, and county level. With partner and agency support, engage regulatory offices and key personnel
  3. Write reports, permit applications (including NEPA and HEPA), proposals

 

Communication Duties (secondary responsibilities):

  1. Develop and make presentations to scientific and non-scientific groups, including important stakeholders, community members, and general public presentations; including identifying possible opposition and creatively and productively engaging them
  2. Develop materials, such as infographics and other, to facilitate understanding of difficult concepts
  3. Support fundraising efforts

 

Position Requirements:

The successful applicant will be skilled at interacting with a wide diversity of stakeholders, from community members, to state and federal staff, regulatory and environmental compliance officials, elected officials and others. An ability to translate complex and controversial scientific issues into accessible and engaging presentations and conversations is mandatory. This person must be driven to achieve the project goals and find solutions to obstacles, yet do so with patience and grace in their interactions with stakeholders and partners.

Key skills:

  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, institutions, ecology
  • Knowledge of arthropod population ecology, vector control, and biotechnology
  • Self-motivation, ability to work independently and also as a productive, positive member of a team
  • Meeting facilitation and management
  • Ability to understand motivations in individuals and groups and creating paths to allow these stakeholders to become involved in developing solutions
  • Conflict resolution
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and orally) with both scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Community engagement and public outreach
  • Knowledge of NEPA and HEPA
  • Fundraising
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Salary and Terms of Employment:

  • Up to 1-year position with a possibility of extension
  • We offer competitive compensation, including benefits
  • Less than 100% time may be considered for the right applicant
