FOREST MANAGEMENT FIELD/DATA TECHNICIAN – ID# 18627. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Forest Management Section, located in Kahului, Maui.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,509 - $4,204/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Inputs collected metadata and spatial data into database and produces data for reports.  Downloads global positioning system (GPS) data.  Responsible for all global information system mapping (ArcGIS).  Provides GIS for all aerial and ground surveys.  Participates regularly in field operations, including monitoring native ecosystems, controlling feral animal populations, building and maintaining fence lines, controlling alien plant invasions using chemical and mechanical means, and restoring native vegetation.  Must assure safety, quality control, and prevent species dispersal.  Occasionally works independently on various projects.  Loads, unloads, aims, and fires handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience, dealing with biological resources and conducting natural resource management field work.  Experience must include database and GIS management.  Experience needs to be documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field and can include internships and accredited volunteer work.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of and/or expertise in fieldwork techniques and data collection/management. Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Knowledgeable with Microsoft Access and Excel. Familiar with scientific methods as they relate to conservation actions.  Ability to use a Personal Computer (PC) and have working knowledge of Microsoft (MS) Access Database, ArcGIS mapping program (ArcGIS 9.x), and other Microsoft Office programs.  Ability to read maps and aerial photographs.  Ability to work with small, mechanized equipment in a safe manner. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field.  Ability to use GPS and maps.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Ability to obtain Basic Aviation Certification within six (6) months from date of hire.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge of threats to native Hawaiian ecosystems from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.  Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere.  Basic Aviation Certification and/or helicopter survey experience.  Ability to identify native Hawaiian plants and alien weed plant species.  Awareness of Hawaiian culture and biota and threats from alien species.  Experience with control of alien species.
