Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park is a 1200-acre national park unit located on the west coast of the island of Hawai‘i. The Park was established in 1978 for the preservation, protection, and interpretation of traditional Hawaiian activities and culture. The Park contains spectacular cultural sites and history, Hawaiian fishponds, anchialine pools, native endangered waterbirds, and other wildlife, coral reefs, and coastal dryland forest. Participants will assist NPS Resource Management staff with restoration, inventory, monitoring, and educational efforts at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park.

Duties:

  • Native ecosystem restoration efforts in coastal dryland forest and wetlands to restore the biocultural landscape. Restoration actions will include mechanical, manual, and chemical methods of vegetation management.
  • Remove and control destructive invasive plants by cutting and hauling them from around and within cultural sites in the Park, and applying chemical treatments to control regrowth as needed.
  • Non-native predator control program (mongoose and feral cat) by opening and baiting traps, checking traps and removing animals, and closing traps, and monitoring predators with tracking tunnels (setting, collecting, and "reading" cards).
  • Other park resource management activities including assisting with organizing and running a monthly (weekend) community volunteer day, participating in water quality, waterbird, marine turtle, plant, and coastal wave run-up monitoring projects among others, and may on occasion assist other divisions (interpretation, facilities maintenance, visitor and resource protection) as cross-training.
  • Monitoring and inventory efforts will require participants to communicate and document observations of resources in the Park.
  • Educational efforts will include research and basic synthesis of information to produce educational/interpretive material such as resource briefs or talking points for guided walks.
  • Visitor contacts or guided groups.
  • Some light office work is required.

Participants will receive the following trainings:

  • Communication and documentation standards for monitoring.
  • Small hand tools and small machinery such as gas-powered weed-eater/brush cutter and a wood chipper.
  • Safe and controlled application of chemical treatments following all NPS Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policies and procedures. The IPM approach coordinates the use of pest biology, environmental information, and available technology to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage by the most economical means while minimizing risk to people, property, resources, and the environment.
