The Field Technician position focuses on protection of native Hawaiian forest and the associated
watershed functions. This position will involve working with TNC staff and partners to monitor and
control alien species and their impacts to Hawai‘i’s forests.
The position will require camping in remote mountainous areas for up to four days at a time and
conducting physically demanding job duties in extremely rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury, as well as
helicopter operations.
Daily field operations or office tasks will include but is not limited to alien plant removal, fence
construction, feral ungulate control, trail/fence maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, data
entry to record field data, and outreach activities. Outreach activities include assisting with hikes, special
events and working with volunteers in alien plant and animal removal.
Preferred qualifications: Familiarity with Hawai‘i’s native forests and an understanding of and sensitivity
to Hawai‘i’s local culture.
• Assist with natural resources management field operations which include: controlling and eliminating
alien animals and plants using a variety of methods (herbicide, hand and motorized tools, firearms,
traps, and other implements)
• Monitor vegetation condition and ungulate disturbance
• Maintain and construct fences and trails
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Collect data, maintain accurate records, analyze data and prepare reports
• Lead volunteers and partners in field activities
• Support office and outreach duties
