Kalaupapa National Historical Park
Description of Work: The primary duty of this position is to remove woody shrub and tree growth encroaching on fences enclosing Natural Resource maintenance units on the Kalaupapa peninsula. The technician will assist with rehabilitating old fences including the removal of old materials, setting new posts, and putting up new fencing. The technician will also assist with native plant restoration projects, including collecting plant material, plant propagation, nursery maintenance, data collection, and out-planting.
Working Conditions: Kalaupapa National Historical Park is an isolated duty station in a small settlement with limited access. There is no road access to the peninsula and the settlement of Kalaupapa. Extremely basic emergency room care is available on the peninsula for bona fide emergencies. The park extends from ¼ mile off shore up through stretches of valleys and cliffs ranging from sea level to approximately 2000 ft elevation. Annual temperatures range from an average high of about 75 degrees in January to about 85 degrees in July, and high relative humidity. The hot/humid summer climate can create extreme working conditions in all ecological zones,
Equipment/tools: Hand tools (shovels, handsaws, pruners), Sprayers, small power tools (limbing saw, power auger, string trimmer, chipper). Gloves, closed shoes, eye and hearing protection, flight suit, gloves and helmet provided when required.
Training Provided: Park and settlement orientation and appropriate safety briefing for all tools and activities
Reports To: Day-to-Day Supervisor: Kalaupapa Terrestrial Ecologist or appointed staff/volunteer leader.
Knowledge/skills:
Required: Might be asked to hike up to five (5) miles over rough and uneven terrain, swim to and from boats in near shore waters, ride in Helicopters (after required training), operate chainsaws and other power tools, and camp overnight in remote areas. Ability to lift 35 pounds.
Desired experience: Proficiency at using hand tools and small chainsaw. Shadehouse/nursery management experience, Knowledge of basic Hawaiian plant identification, experience with collection of plant seeds and cuttings, and basic field data collection.
Desired trainings: Chainsaw, basic aviation, pesticide applicators license.

January 7, 2019 - November 22, 2019 (11 months, full time)

Applicant Requirements:
1. Age - Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the start date of the service term (due to AmeriCorps regulations).
2. Diploma - Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
3. Citizenship - Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations).
5. Housing/Transportation - Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.
