The ‘Alalā Project is hiring a temporary RCUH position, for a 5-month predator control technician based in Hilo, Hawaii. Work will span early December 2018- early May 2019. The work schedule will be 40/hours per week, Monday through Friday. 

Compensation: $14.89 per hour 

Duties: Implement fieldwork with the goal of restoring habitat and reducing predation risk by conducting mammalian predator control and removal on windward Mauna Loa, Hawai’i Island,to benefit the restoration of the ʻAlalā (Hawaiian Crow, Corvus hawaiiensis). Conduct all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols.  Assist with maintenance of field equipment and field stations, including proper storage of trapping equipment, air-gun, baits, and pesticides. Assist with base yard maintenance and maintaining and decontamination of project vehicles and equipment. Ensure proper collection and timely entry of data and other records by field assistants, and enter data for analysis. Assist in re-sighting and monitoring of ʻAlalā, by use of compass and GPS navigation. Update databases and electronic records. Prepare maps, and help generate summaries and preliminary analyses of data. 

Physical abilities: Able to conduct fieldwork in forest under cold, wet, and rugged field conditions. Able to hike on poor footing conditions carrying loads up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road (4-wheel drive), air-gun use, and use of pesticides.

Experience:  At least six months of experience of predator control and removal, including safe handling, setting, and maintenance of mechanical small mammal traps. Demonstrated experience working in remote areas independently.
