Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Lyon Arboretum, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,509/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Delivers Hawaiian cultural, plant and natural science related curriculum for Lyon Arboretum's (PK-12) school programs and nature day camps. Provides administrative support for the education office (scheduling school visits, tours, docents, and volunteers, as well as record keeping, public relations, social media, and purchasing of supplies) and other duties associated with the Lyon Arboretum education and community outreach programs. Assists with the daily preparation of instructional equipment and materials for the school program and community classes and routine maintenance of the Children's Learning Center, Education Center, and Children's Garden. Assists with the development of interpretive materials for educational exhibits. Assists with the recruitment of volunteers, supervision of student assistants, interns, and volunteers. Manages Lyon Arboretum’s website, social media and other online accounts. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences, Education, Environmental Studies or other closely related fields.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience with primary responsibilities of teaching in a formal or informal setting.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian natural history, principles associated with standards-based education and informal education. Fluent in English and familiarity/understanding of Hawaiian language basics. Demonstrated ability to engage and communicate with children and adults of diverse ages, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, physical and cognitive abilities, and group dynamics. Demonstrated ability to adapt curriculum activities and delivery in an environment with constantly changing hazards, logistics and audiences.  Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, writes clearly and effectively, and verbally communicates in a positive manner in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to manage time and workload under time-sensitive conditions with competing deadlines. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google’s G Suite, social medial platforms (such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube) and website management tools such as Wordpress. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass post-offer criminal background check.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to conduct tours, field trips, and gardening in dynamic, inclement weather conditions (sun and rain), muddy and uneven terrain, and in environments with significant amounts of mosquitoes. Must be able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Teaching experience in an informal education program at a botanical garden, nature center, or museum.  Academically trained or demonstrated experience in topics of sustainability, environmental education, Hawai‘i natural history, tropical gardening, and/or plant sciences.  Must be committed and sensitive to the needs of adults and children.  Excellent working knowledge of natural resources, native Hawaiian and Polynesian plants.  Strong commitment to 21st Century Learning in informal education. Very comfortable in an outdoor work environment.  Should be able to work well and communicate effectively with large groups and with individuals of all ages.  Team oriented and possesses excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.  Experience with University of Hawai‘i administrative procedures. Previous experience as the social media and website manager for a business or company. Experience with graphic design programs (Publisher, Photoshop, Illustrator).
