The Crew Supervisor’s (supervisor’s) primary responsibility is to provide day-to-day onsite leadership to Crew Members. S/he must possess a high degree of leadership and organizational skills. Supervisors are the authoritative figures responsible for motivating, developing, disciplining, and looking out for the well-being of each member. Supervisors transport members to field sites (in program provided vehicles, sometimes offroad), set a strong example as they work alongside crew members on field projects, and ensure that members are prepared for upcoming activities. Supervisors must communicate effectively and professionally with host site staff and supervisors, as well as Kupu staff. The Supervisor will assist Kupu program coordinators and managers in planning and running program-related activities. Supervisors must be comfortable working in rugged environments, and be able to perform physically demanding work (see physical and behavioral requirements below*). Supervisors make an effort to further expand their knowledge and their members’ knowledge, especially in the areas of: native plants and animals, invasive species, natural resource management, Hawaiian culture, and Leadership and character development. The supervisor will act in the best interest of Kupu, NPS Kalauapa National Historic Park and the team members, and act in a fair, safe, effective, and legal manner.
On a weekly basis, supervisors are required to check in with their program coordinator/manager, keep a record of the team’s progress and work efforts and ensure timesheets and other paperwork are turned in accurately and on time. Supervisors will ensure proper use and maintenance of worksite vehicles and equipment, manage personnel issues, and follow all guidelines set forth by Kupu staff. Supervisors will participate in program activities with their teams Monday through Friday, generally for eight-hour work days between the hours of 7am and 5pm, while living in assigned cabins on the Park premises. Supervisors may have the opportunity to engage in program-related neighbor island travel. In this case, accommodations, and other miscellaneous expenses will be covered by HYCC. Please note that the supervisor position may involve substantial commitment outside of program activities, on the weekends, including communication with team members/Kupu staff, completing program-related paperwork, planning logistics for the upcoming work week and purchasing and prepping the team’s food and equipment (budget and equipment provided by Kupu.).
