Kalaupapa National Historic Park
This program is outdoors, service-based and will be physically demanding. A positive attitude, and the physical and behavioral ability and desire to work hard on intensive outdoor projects is required.
Participants will work as a team all summer and learn about natural resource management by taking part in coastal plant restoration in Kalaupapa National Historic Park. Members will make professional contacts in environmental fields and gain life skills. Members must be comfortable working in rugged environments, and be able to perform physically demanding work, including carrying and applying herbicide according to manufacturer’s instructions (see physical and behavioral requirements below). They must make an effort to further expand their knowledge, especially in the areas of: native plants and animals, invasive species, natural resource management, Hawaiian culture, and leadership and character development. Crew members must act in the best interest of Kupu, NPS Kalauapa National Historic Park, and their entire crew, and act in a fair, safe, effective, and legal manner.
Members will participate in work activities Monday through Friday generally from 7am – 7pm, while living in assigned cabins on the Park premises. Food for basic meals will be provided. The crew will receive a group allotment of food. Members are responsible for collaborating together to decide how to handle meal preparation and clean up.
