  1. SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Exempt, Full-Time, Contracted Employee (Altres HR) with Molokai Land Trust (MLT) to perform designated tasks on lands owned by MLT and contracted work sites through MLT, as well as other lands through partnerships with Federal, State, Nonprofit, and private lands on the Island of Molokai, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.  Full health benefits and paid leave.

 

 

Serves as project coordinator for the MLT,Coordinate day-to-day field operations for all lands of MLT, including but not limited to manage/monitor users of access systems; conducts scheduling, logistics planning, and implementation.  Spearheads efforts with MLT staff and partners to coordinate and plan field and other conservation activities, such as monitoring native ecosystem, feral animal control, fence line building and maintenance, and mechanical and chemical alien plant control

 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,960 - $4,500/Month

 

SCOPE OF POSITION:

 

  • Reports to:   William “Butch” Haase MLT Executive Director

George Benda MLT board President  

 

  • Supervises:  Field Crew Workers/Technicians, Temporary Hires, Interns, and Volunteers

 

  • Budgetary and/or Fiscal Responsibilities:  Participates in project budget process

 

  • Signature Authorities: Timesheet, purchase orders, minor credit and local vendor account purchases, etc.

 

Level of Interaction: Supervises and leads field teams through direct participation and oversight.  Delegates responsibilities to field team members as appropriate for project completion.  Works primarily with MLT Executive Director William “Butch” Haaseto develop and carry out work strategies, budgets and schedules.  Able to implement and complete various projects with a high level of independence. Able to work irregular hours under difficult conditions.  The majority of job functions will take place in remote areas, with travel by foot, 4x4 Vehicle and/or helicopter in/out of remote work sites and/or camp locations for periods of one to four (1-4) nights in inclement weather. Fieldwork requires working with pesticides, power and heavy equipment, working in and around helicopters, and occasional rappelling. Exercises professional judgment in choosing from a range of available treatment methods to meet specific site requirements and for management planning.  Must interact well with people and will collaborate with the MLT staff and partners, the community and personnel from other active management agencies/organizations including but not limited to the State of Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, The National Park Service, the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, Volunteer Stewardship Network, the U.S, Fish and Wildlife Service, Molokai Plant Extinction Prevention Program (MOPEP), and the Molokai Invasive Species Committee (MOISC). Exhibits good leadership and communication skills, have excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.  Duty hours may vary and may include some early morning and late evening hours.  Exposure to extreme temperature, biting/stinging insects, difficult terrain, and adverse weather conditions is common.

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

70%    1.         Supervises field crew (technicians, interns, volunteers) in carrying out fence inspection, construction and maintenance, conduct predator control efforts of feral animal/ungulate (feline, canine, mongoose, rodent, ungulate, non-native vegetation); order, repair and maintain field equipment, supplies, vehicles and facilities, and proficient in use of power tools (chainsaw, chipper, weed whacker, etc.)as directed by the MLT Executive Director William “Butch” Haase

 

                        Directs and works with field crew to systematically map/monitor resources and control target species.  Provides assistance with and/or leads training of field crew in appropriate work methods and procedures.  Schedules and produces work plans for all field activities under the guidance of theMLT Executive Director William “Butch” Haase

 

                                           

10% 2.           Keeps daily records of all field activities and efforts, areas surveyed, plants treated/removed, herbicide usage, transects cleared, stream segments cleared, worker hours and travel details, as well as precise location records.  Records and reports daily activities on maps, and/or on hand held Global Positioning System (GPS) unit, on various data sheets, and any other relevant notes relating to each work site and objective.  Downloads and helps with processing of all field collected data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Excel, Access, and photo databases. Enters data and assists with analysis.

 

10% 3.           Assists partnership members in construction and maintenance of fences, roads and trails; performs alien animal and weed control; gathers and records reliable field data; installs and monitors vegetation, water quality, stream/riparian and/or ungulate transect lines or monitoring stations; wildfire control, management and monitoring; riparian or habitat restoration, rehabilitation and out-planting; protects and propagates rare and native plants; maintains watershed partnership equipment, facilities, and communication systems.  

 

10% 4.           Assists the MLT Executive Director William “Butch” Haaseand performs other duties as assigned by MLT Executive Director

 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in the Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Geography or Hawaiian Studies with basic, or related, Biological courses.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to three (3) years of work or volunteer experience in or related to managing natural resources.  Experience must be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or nonprofit organization in the appropriate field.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: General knowledge of herbicide use, weed control techniques, and vegetation and/or rare plant monitoring techniques and data collection.  Able to use altimeter, compass and maps and to use word-processing, database and spreadsheet programs.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must be able to obtain and maintain State of Hawaii Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides Category 2 and Category 10 within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must possess American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  Must be able to pass a post-offer criminal background check for employment.  Must provide a copy of driver’s abstract devoid of citations reflecting “poor driving record” as defined by MLT.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike up to ten (10) miles per day, and camp in remote areas and/or rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days.  Able to backpack, lift, and carry up to thirty-five (35) pounds unassisted. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable MLT/Altres HR policies and procedures.  Violation of MLT's, or Altres HR's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Education and experience in programs managing rare and endangered species and ecosystems in the Hawaiian Islands, familiarity with Hawaii native and non-native plant taxa, and/or experience in natural resources monitoring techniques.  Previous experience in weed, ungulate, rodent and other threat control in the Hawaiian Islands. Experience with chainsaws and digging and cutting tools.  Familiarity with data analysis and presentation utilizing GPS and ArcGIS, PowerPoint, and large file sharing systems. Familiarity with American Veterinarian Association Guidelines for Euthanasia in the Field.
