Duties and Responsibilities
  1. • Works with minimal supervision under the direction of the Lyon Arboretum’s Hawaiian Rare Plant Program Manager to manage the day to day operations of the Seed Conservation Laboratory (SCL), which receives seeds of rare Hawaiian plants for cleaning, curation and germplasm storage.
  2. • Develops seed conservation practices through research, trials, and observations and determines the appropriate ex-situ storage strategy for each native Hawaiian taxon.
  3. • Works with program collaborators to plan rare plant stabilization actions, determine propagule collection needs, facilitate outplanting projects, research and apply pollination/breeding techniques as needed to secure viable propagules for ex-situ storage.
  4. • Fosters mutually beneficial cooperative seed storage and propagation outreach efforts with other botanic institutions, government regulatory and land management agencies, conservation and local community organizations, and private industry.
  5. • Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. • Possession of a PhD degree in Horticulture, Botany, or related plant science field and at least three (3) years of work experience in seed physiology and/or seed conservation.
  2. • Extensive knowledge and competency in seed science including: physiology, curation, and germination techniques.
  3. • Knowledge of the native Hawaiian flora and that of tropical and semi-tropical Pacific regions.
  4. • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable international, federal, and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems applicable to Hawaii, associated with the governing of collections, handling of plant material.
  5. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. • Proven ability to work effectively in a research and education environment and establish and maintain professional relationships with personnel and collaborators.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. • Physically capable to undertake field work in remote locations.
  2. • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  3. • Record of publication of scientific work in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. • Knowledge in managing genetic plant stocks for native plant conservation.
  5. • Experienced in working in a lab environment and maintaining lab instruments associated with seed research.
  6. • Available to work periodic weekend activities and events.
