Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide programmatic educational support to project directors, currently for Coffee Berry Borer Areawide Pest Management project.
  2. Assists in planning, development and upkeep of educational demonstration field plots; and conducts applied field trials based on project and clientele needs.
  3. Plans, schedules, and collects data; and assists in data compilation and analysis, production and preparation of reports, posters, videos, publications, workshop materials and presentations, etc.
  4. Organizes, coordinates, promotes, executes, and evaluates applied field trial activities and extension events, included but not limited to meetings, workshops, field days, and conferences on all main Hawaiian Islands. (cont'd)...

  6. Assists with small group & 1-on-1 consultation with producers, including farm visits. Consultation & workshop topics include coffee berry borer, pest diagnostics, pest management, & pesticide use, & may also include soil fertility assessments, (cont'd)..
  7. ...(Cont'd) irrigation management, propagation, pruning, organic and sustainable practices, post-harvest handling issues, marketing issues, recordkeeping, crop insurance, good agricultural practices and other coffee/farming-related topics.
  8. Assists in researching specifications, obtaining price quotations and permits, purchasing supplies and equipment, and completing associated documentation.
  9. Travel around the island and inter-island to attend industry meetings, conduct educational events and applied field trials, and assist with farm consultations. Meetings may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
  10. Responsible to maintain accurate records, and submit timely written reports to project director.
  11. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in entomology, agriculture or related area and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for N/A; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in extension teaching methods demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with pesticide usage.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the field trials.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  9. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Able to carry up to 50 pounds, and walk up and down steep and uneven roads and farms with equipment/supplies.
  11. Demonstrated ability to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical software.
  12. Experience with social media programs and website design.
  13. Knowledge of pesticide usage and pesticide laws and regulations; competency in reading pesticide labels.
  14. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. This requirement may be fulfilled by possession of a valid State of Hawai‘i Driver’s License (Class 3),..(cont'd)

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Some experience with coffee and orchard crops.
  2. Familiarity and good rapport with agricultural organizations, particularly with coffee and orchard crops, and ag-related government agencies.
  3. Ability to speak and/or read Spanish.
