Duties and Responsibilities
  1. The GIS and database lab manager will be tasked with mapping and geo-referencing arboretum grounds and all living collections. This will include the migration of current mapping framework from AutoCAD to a more appropriate platform such as ArcGIS.
  2. Collaborates with Director and staff to develop, maintain, and oversee an online database management system of arboretum accessions that is accessible to all stakeholders.
  3. Oversees database management system, and collaborates with Director and staff to ensure that database information is accurate and can be updated or modified on an as needed basis.
  4. Collaborates with Director and staff to develop informative arboretum maps with trail guidelines, and other pertinent information, for arboretum visitors
  5. Act as Lyon Arboretum’s representative for information systems and technology management.
  6. Assists researchers with projects involving mapping or georeferencing of information
  7. Supervises volunteers and staff in particular assignments when necessary
  8. Assists at Arboretum events such as open houses, dedications, memorial services, and plant sales, which include periodic weekend activities.
  9. Prepares procurement documents of supplies and equipment or coordinates the borrowing of supplies and equipment from other University departments.
  10. Keep abreast of new developments, technology, and software relating to plant records management.
  11. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Natural Resources Management, or a related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for GIS related work; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of natural resources management, geographic information systems, and database management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with safety procedures.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  9. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  10. Must be proficient with computers and common data processing software.
  11. Experience must include demonstrated technical knowledge, research and application of geographic information systems software such as ArcGIS and ESRI, and database management software such as Darwin Core.
  12. Experience in use of high precision GPS devices (such as Trimble) and other mapping equipment and associated software.
  13. Basic knowledge of, and experience in, plant identification.
  14. Must be able to lift and carry weights in excess of 50 lbs.
  15. Must be able to work in uneven terrain in inclement conditions.
  16. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  17. Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and coordinate multiple activities and projects.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Natural Resources Management, or a related field.
  2. Working knowledge of the native Hawaiian trees and non-native tropical trees, and plant taxonomy in general.
