COFFEE BERRY BORER QUARANTINE TECHNICIAN – ID# 18244. 

College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS) located on Oahu.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,353/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Conducts laboratory operations to test host range of Coffee Berry Borer (CBB) natural enemies.  Laboratory work involves maintaining pest, related species, and natural enemy colonies, making artificial diets, and maintenance of laboratory areas inside of the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) Quarantine Facility.  Implements protocols to test host range of CBB natural enemies, follows decontamination protocols, and conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols.  Occasional fieldwork includes off trail areas where exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, heavy rainfall, mosquitoes, and difficult terrain is common.  Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road.  May require interisland travel to collect locally-sourced natural enemies, CBB, and other related species.  May require occasional travel for project meetings. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of entomology, entomological laboratory, field collection and preservation techniques, and the threats that invasive species, such as the CBB, pose to Hawai‘i.  Good oral and written communication skills.  Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work.  Ability and experience working with small, mechanized equipment.  Basic computer skills.  Ability to properly pin and label insects with minimum on-the-job training.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds.
