Initial Employment term from April 2018-February 2019 with potential for long term advancement into an executive director position, based on funding and grant success.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Program Manager for the Hawai‘i Environmental Education Alliance (HEEA) provides program management of multiple programs, supports strategic direction and leadership, fund development, and facilitation to build effective, statewide, partnerships and professional capacity building to support the Hawaii public and private P-20 education programs. S/he works closely with the HEEA Board Team, committees and partners to achieve HEEA priority objectives based on the Hawaii Environmental Literacy Plan.

This position will guide the development of program and partnerships that support environmental literacy across the state, nation, and internationally. As HEEA’s lead staff, s/he oversees all HEEA initiatives, manages programs, manages grants, coordinates fund development including grant writing, donor/funder relations and budget planning, and implements long term plans under the direction and the support of the HEEA Board.

Training and support will be provided, Moderate Travel required

Position will maintain a home office, and may be located on any of the Hawaiian Islands

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

HEEA Coordination & Network Management:

  • Implement and manage the DOE PDE-3 (Pilina Program). This will involve working with Teachers, Principals, and Complex Area Superintendents to recruit schools that are ‘ready’ to support their teachers in environmental education. It will also involve working with nonprofit and government partners on the training to support outdoor components and curriculum. The PM will also explore relationships to administer and develop new programs with DOE, College of Education, and others.

  • Work with the board to identify and engage key leaders in a strategic and effective public-private network to promote environmental education

  • Train with contracted HEEA staff to learn how to maintain and build HEEA partnerships through effective communication and relationships. This consists of engaging in social media, island-based hui meetings, regular quarterly newsletter outreach to partners, and other communication opportunities that build awareness and partnerships to advance environmental education and literacy throughout the islands.

  • Plan and lead island Hui Meetings with Board Members to build awareness and support networks of EE professionals and teachers.

  • Jointly plan and facilitate HEEA meetings and events to achieve tangible outcomes, including quarterly Board Team meetings, periodic EE Symposium Committee meetings, and strategic HEEA events. Assist all HEEA teams and committees to achieve HEEA priorities, as needed

  • Manage and facilitate the board annual review of HEEA’s sustainable financial plan with strategic direction from the board. The PM will be expected to implement the short and long-term goals that sustain HEEA’s key activities and functions. Work with the board to secure, manage, and grow the annual HEEA cash budget (approximately $110,000 annually) and in-kind commitments from diverse sources.

  • Develop tools to support HEEA’s brand (e.g. social media platforms and management, promotional materials, fliers, etc.) with board guidance and approval.

  • Maintain and build relationships with philanthropic partners, the Hawai‘i formal education community, including but not limited to the Hawai‘i Department of Education and Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools, government agencies, land managers, environmental organizations, University and College systems and community partners to build partnerships and collaboration.

  • Work with national and international partners such as the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP), Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Project Learning Tree and others to further develop Hawaii’s international role and profile as a partner in environmental literacy.

  • Ensure that HEEA maintains a strong connection as the state affiliate for NAAEE through participation in activities such as affiliate network leadership, advocacy calls, annual conference attendance, etc. Share results with the HEEA network and board.

  • Assist HEEA contractors in coordinating all aspects of the annual Environmental Education Symposium including funding, scholarships, content, promotions, planning, etc. with the support of the HEEA board. There currently is support for the 2018 EE Symposium, working with the contractor, NOAA staff, and support will be required.

  • Learn about HEEA’s capacity building programs (e.g. grant writing, branding and marketing workshops, etc.) and develop recommendations for future workshops and how to best assess the needs around the islands. Island Hui meetings will be a way to learn about needs and help to determine next steps for the future.

  • Implement strategic direction developed by the board. Refine as needed with the support of the board. Report progress and opportunities to the HEEA board through monthly financial and progress reports in accordance with the work plan.  Seek board direction when needed.

  • Coordinate all aspects of fund development including: grant writing, reporting, and financial management to ensure HEEA remains in good standing with funding partners including HEEA’s fiscal sponsor, Friends of the Future. Coordinate fund development with the HEEA contractor with work done in 2017 and first quarter of 2018 in accordance with board policy.

  • Provide brief biweekly reports to board on progress.

  • Other duties as assigned.
