Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Under the general supervision of the Associate of Science in Natural Science (ASNS) Coordinator, or designee, supports instructors’ use of place based pedagogies.
  2. Plan, coordinate, prepare, stage, supervise, and break down lessons that take place in natural environment venues. Procure, inventory, and organize lab materials and supplies related to field work.
  3. Contact managers of natural resource venues to request access for instruction. These venues include, but are not limited to those under the care of State of Hawaii, US Army, US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Hawaii Nature Center (HNC), The Nature Conservancy, private landowners including Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate, and others.
  4. Foster collaborative relationships with these venues so that the condition of the site is improved via the place based instructional activity.
  5. Design, implement, evaluate, and improve a series of professional development activities for instructors within a Professional Learning Community (PLC) format. Ensure that PLC activities are accessible and relevant to ASNS instructors’ needs.
  6. Conduct on-going recruitment and engagement of ASNS instructors who use place based pedagogies.
  7. Design, coordinate and facilitate a schedule of series of professional development activities that will be delivered and stored within an Internet based tool (such as Laulima or Google Drive).
  8. Occasionally, coordinate in person activities such as field trips, speakers, and meetings.
  9. Assist in collecting student and faculty participation data so that grant evaluator can assess impact on teaching and learning.
  10. Use of Hawaiian language, culture, history, epistemologies, and practices for the above listed objectives is encouraged.
  11. Evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments may arise periodically.
  12. Must be able to provide own transportation to off-campus sites.
  13. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in any science field and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for conducting scientific research or facilitating training; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in conducting scientific research or facilitating training demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with conducting scientific research or facilitating training.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the support of students with diverse academic, social, and economic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate concepts and ideas to individuals and groups.
  9. Ability to use spreadsheet and/or database software.
  10. Ability to work outside in the field, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform physical labor within extreme weather conditions including heat, rain, and wind.
  11. Knowledge of local cultural and natural resource sites.
  12. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree in any science field.
  2. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, language, history, community issues and resources.
