SNAIL EXTINCTION PREVENTION PROGRAM TECHNICIAN – ID# 18116.

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) located in the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR)-Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Administrative Office in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,571 - $4,730/Mon.

DUTIES:  Assists the Snail Extinction Prevention (SEP) Program Specialist with all aspects of rare snail conservation. Installs and regularly monitors rat trapping grids around snail populations. Participates in field surveys for rare snail species. Regularly monitors target rare snail populations and collects, enters, and analyzes field data. Maintains and monitors predator-proof exclosure structures. Assists with new captive rearing efforts. Queries literature and management staff for historical rare snail localities, and helps to identify prospective survey areas. Participates in other management activities including but not limited to, weed removal, fencing, out-planting, chameleon control and predatory snail control.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences or a related field (i.e. Biology, Malacology, Zoology, Ecology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, Conservation, or Environmental Sciences).  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience working in native Hawaiian ecosystems. Experience conducting field research or biological monitoring.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems and native and invasive flora and fauna of the islands. Solid understanding of current conservation issues impacting the Hawaiian Islands.  Able to communicate clearly and effectively. Excellent organizational skills. Experience working with Microsoft Office.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days.  Able to backpack, lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Ability to conduct field work in remote locations and rugged terrain. Ability to hike for up to eight (8) miles in mountainous conditions. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience working with Hawaiian land snails. Knowledge of Hawai‘i’s snail fauna, including ecology, biology, and existing threats to Hawaiian snails.
