KISC OUTREACH ASSOCIATE – ID# 18053.  

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC), located in Kapaa, Kauai.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,200/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Develops and maintains a positive public image for KISC operations.  Develops and implements public education and outreach program to raise public awareness about invasive species and generate support for KISC’s efforts to control them.  Acts as primary contact for public inquiries.  Makes presentations to community and school groups.  Obtains and maintains permission to control invasive species on public and private property.  Plans and runs volunteer events.  Fields reports of KISC target species from the general public.  Works with KISC partners including Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) to organize joint control efforts.  Develops, produces and maintains display boards, flyers, brochures, computer presentations and other educational materials for public events, educational sessions or landowner contacts.  

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience in public outreach, environmental education or a similar type of position.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of and/or ability to speak knowledgeably about Hawaiian biota and threats from alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.  Knowledge of natural and cultural history.  Must possess excellent public speaking and writing skills.  Excellent organizational, communication and computer skills, including graphic design.  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of people.  Must be highly creative and demonstrate an ability to produce original types of media.  Must be able to think and act independently under pressure and in the public eye while striving to present a positive public image.  Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate effectively with reluctant landowners.  Ability to work with and contribute positively to a dynamic and diverse workforce.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike in rugged terrain. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Education in a natural resources management field or previous experience working in natural resources management.  Education or experience in education, journalism, marketing or related field.  Computer skills in presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint), databases and desktop publishing.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with media personnel regarding priorities and workload.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively and accurately with high degree of independence.
