The University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Natural Sciences, Department of Botany, invites applications for a full-time, tenured faculty position, at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, pending position clearance and availability of funds. To begin approximately August 1, 2018 or as soon thereafter as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities

    We are searching for a highly creative and interactive scholar who fits into our multidisciplinary department, who has significant scientific programmatic experience, and who would serve as the Director of the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU: http://manoa.hawaii.edu/hpicesu/pcsu.htm). PCSU is a University of Hawaii research unit focusing on basic and applied research on conservation of natural resources and biodiversity in Hawaii and the Pacific, working with a range of state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, private foundations, and private landowners. The unit has a multi-million dollar annual budget and employs more than 400 people across the State.
    As Director of PCSU: 75% FTE. Serves as principal investigator for numerous projects primarily in the Hawaiian Islands. Topics include basic and applied conservation and adaptive management for endangered and invasive species and ecosystems. Decides on focus and direction of PCSU and supervises project leaders and support staff from pre-proposal through final reporting. Works with departmental and university leadership, partner agencies, and other decision makers to address issues related to PCSU administration and projects.
    25% FTE. Serves as graduate advisor and on graduate committees. Teaches at least one course per year, based on administrative constraints. Maintains a productive line of research. Serves on departmental and university committees.

Minimum Qualifications

    An earned Ph.D. in Botany, Biology, or a closely related field. A sustained track record of publishing peer-reviewed research with recognition as a leader in a field related to conservation biology. A minimum of 5 years of administrative and management experience of multiple simultaneous projects and staff. Evidence of significant ability to raise funds, and implement and manage programs. Evidence of ability to connect with diverse constituencies. Strong communication and advocacy skills.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

    A minimum of 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent

Professor Minimum Qualifications

    A minimum of 5 years of experience at the Associate Professor level or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

    Demonstrated experience with and understanding of Hawaiian politics and economy, and of Hawaiian, island and tropical ecosystems. Knowledge of state and federal regulatory processes related to conservation. Knowledge of state and federal regulations and compliance for grant and contract management. Knowledge of federal and state labor laws. Knowledge of workplace safety standards and OSHA policies.
