CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands.
Position Summary:
A Botanical Field Crew Leader (Research Associate II Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. This position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii, a high-elevation ecosystem in the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.
The Botanical Field Crew Leader implements natural resource management actions in the field such as rare plant surveys, monitoring, seed collection, and outplanting of federally listed species, as well as habitat improvement and vegetation monitoring. Required Qualifications:
- BS/BA in botany or related plant science and at least 3 years of related experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of plant taxonomy and identification, especially species found in Hawaii, including common native, rare, and non-native species.
- Experience with surveying and monitoring of vegetation and rare plants.
- Demonstrated ability to hike for 6-8 hours and up to 10 kilometers per day while carrying field pack over rough terrain, inclement weather.
- Able to obtain a State of Hawaii Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license within 3 months of hire date; must maintain Hawaii State Pesticide Applicator’s certificate throughout employment.
- Complete A-100 Helicopter Safety Training after hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated competency and experience with dichotomous keys to identify plant species.
- Experience with seed collection, outplanting, and site maintenance for common native and federally listed plant species.
- Experience with chemical and mechanical control techniques for invasive plant species.
- Related work experience on a military installation.
- Experience maintaining a herbarium collection including preparing and repairing voucher specimens and labels.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Experience with computers and software including the Microsoft Office Suite and commonly used databases.
- Experience with digital data collection devices and desktop GIS applications to produce maps, navigate, and record data.
- Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles.
Essential Duties:
- 40% Project Management and Plannning
- Assist in training and motivating field staff in field techniques, data entry, and equipment use and maintenance. Implement established safety regulations and provide feedback to develop any emergent regulations. Assist with scheduling of field tasks. Flexible in assignments as well as work schedule. Responsible for coordination with team members to ensure all required data, maps, equipment, supplies, and vehicles are available and prepared for the field day.
- 50% Data Collection/Analysis
- Conduct botanical surveys for federally listed, rare, common native, and non-native plant species. Conduct monitoring of federally listed plant species. Conduct seed collection, outplanting and site maintenance for common native and federally listed plant species. Record, enter, and perform quality control on data recorded during surveys or monitoring. Prepare maps, data sheets, equipment, and conduct a briefing for team members on field tasks. Camping at remote work sites for up to four days at a time. Field work in high hazard areas to include live-fire impact area when escorted by Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel or like contractor.
- 10% Supervision
- Provide feedback to Botanical Manager on performance of individual field crew members. Resolve isolated or minor interpersonal issues within the crew.
