Duties and Responsibilities
- In consultation with the grounds manager, the botanic gardener shall schedule and carry out grounds landscaping work including weed trimming, lawn mowing, pruning, chain sawing in order to maintain the living plant collection.
- **Assists in choosing and locating new plantings, considering the horticultural needs of the plant, theme of the area, ease of maintenance, insurance of survival, separation of similar accessions and aesthetics.
- Inventory and monitor plant collections on a regular basis, recording growth, phenology and status of each plant in the database, updates maps and database accordingly, and rescue plants not doing well.
- Provides horticultural and botanical information when requested to visiting University students and faculty, businesses, government, and the general public.
- Photograph plants for documentation and identification purposes and assure that all photographs are catalogued for easy retrieval.
- Assists in coordinating research and educational activities on the grounds to avoid any negative impact to the landscape and plant collections, and to avoid conflicts between researchers and staff.
- Assists at Arboretum events such as open houses, dedications, memorial services, and plant sales, which will include periodic weekend activities and events.
- Assists in preparing procurement documents of needed supplies and equipment, or coordinates the borrowing of supplies and equipment from other University departments.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in horticulture, botany, natural resource management, landscaping, or related fields and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for horticulture, botany, natural resource management, landscaping; or equivalent education/training or experience.
- Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in gardening and plant systematics demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
- Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with pesticide and hazardous materials.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the complex plant collections.
- Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Basic knowledge of, and experience in plant identification.
- Must be able to use computers and common data processing software.
- Must be able to work in uneven terrain and under inclement conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry weights in excess of 50 lbs.
Desirable Qualifications
- Working knowledge of native Hawaiian and non-native tropical plants, and plant taxonomy.
- Work experience in botanical gardening.
- Knowledge of conservation issues in Hawaii.
- Has experience fixing and repairing small engines as it relates to weed trimmers, lawn mowers, blowers and chain saw.
- Takes pride in being a steward of nature.
- Valid driver's license.
