Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

Description of Event

Waiheʻe Valley on the Windward side of Oʻahu is on Honolulu Board of Water Supply (HBWS) land and has been identified by HBWS as a “potentially high recharge watershed”. KMWP has partnered with HBWS to begin clearing a large site area of invasive and non-native trees and shrubs to replace them with native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plants. The goal is to implement a Riparian Learning Center for nearby schools and communities to utilize, learn from, and give service to.

How to Get There:
Volunteers will gather at the Kahaluʻu Regional Park parking lot (there should be ample parking), and then the group will caravan with KMWP Staff up through locked access gates to reach the worksite.

Parking Approximate Address: 47-114 Waihee Road, Kaneohe, HI 96744

What to Expect:
Join us for a morning in Waiheʻe where we will be contributing to an ongoing plant restoration project being led by the Koʻolau Mountain Watershed Partnership. The KMWP team will provide demos of different techniques they use in the field to eliminate and remove albizia and fiddlewood, two problematic invasive trees species common to the area. Weʻll hear from Dave Elliott with O'ahu Resource Conservation and Development Council on conservation planning and watershed restoration, and use the remaining time for hands-on invasive plant species removal.
