POSITION DETAILS: Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI). Primary work location will be at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) office and other designated work sites on the Island of Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $3,750/mo

DUTIES: Collects, enters, processes and performs analysis of field biological and geospatial data related to natural area reserves on Kauai. Edits and displays geospatial data, utilizing Field-Map, ArcGIS Collector, and Survey 123 as well as other GIS software, programs and mobile devices. Conducts data analysis and produces annual reports and projections to present data for internal and external sources. Compiles information for grant reports. Conducts field monitoring and data recording related to ungulate activity and weed presence and distribution.  Records GPS points and data, including number, type, and location of plants treated, and amount of chemicals used. Fieldwork involves assisting with natural area reserve projects, such as control of non-native plant and animal species (e.g. assists with implementation of trapping grids near native plants, native ecosystem restoration, ungulate fence maintenance and construction, and weed control using pesticides). This work requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road, work in and around helicopters, handle pesticides, fence maintenance and camping. Most fieldwork is conducted in natural areas requiring cross country travel (without trails). Researches and assists with grant applications to increase funding in support of native plant research and conservation.  Performs general program support duties.  Maintains accurate records, files, and tracking on all project activities. Plans, coordinates, schedules, and conducts data collection trainings for natural resource management projects. Participates in outreach and education events.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geomatics, Geography, Biology, Botany, Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.  

EXPERIENCE: Two to four (2-4) years working in data acquisition and analysis management related to natural resource management or closely related field. Incudes at least one (1) year of work experience with database organization and function.

ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Knowledge of field work techniques, including data collection, spatial and relational data analysis, data management, analytical modeling, statistics and remote sensing. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Demonstrated knowledge of Hawaiian plant identification, propagule collection, and outplanting. Working knowledge of rules and policies pertinent to personnel safety and operational matters. Familiarity with applicable Federal/State laws, policies and procedures. Ability to conduct terrestrial field surveys and collect data. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and use map and compass to navigate in dense forests.  Ability to use Global Position Systems (GPS) as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analyzing geospatial data to document features, work locations, and transects.  Ability to analyze information and data from maps, photographs, and censuses, drawing conclusions from their analyses of different sets of data. Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection.  Ability to identify native Hawaiian plants and alien weed plants.  Ability to use PC and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for document, spreadsheet, and presentation preparation and have strong knowledge of ARC GIS desktop, online, and mobile. Familiarity with demonstrated experience with Collector, Survey 123, Field maps and quick capture. Ability to use database programs (e.g., Microsoft Access).  Ability to write summary reports. Ability to work with small mechanized equipment in a safe manner. Good communication skills to facilitate communication between the project and partners.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Field experience working in the Natural Area Reserve System conducting active resource management to protect ecosystems and with control of alien species.  

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike, camp, and work in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days.  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to forty (40) pounds of equipment and supplies unassisted.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.  Performs various physical labor such as fence inspection and installation, or invasive species removal. Must be willing to work long hours in potentially harsh conditions.
