Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) International Pacific Research Center (IPRC), located at the University of Hawai‘i Manoa campus in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,957/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Works with both existing and newly acquired ocean/atmospheric data to maintain data services. Provides server-level support on Unix-based machines that provides web-access to large and varied data sets.  Maintains and enhances web sites that provides data and information to end users. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science, Ocean/Atmospheric Science, or a related scientific field.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience working with data, particularly with large data set manipulation.  Documented programming (including server-level) and script writing.  Experience modifying web pages.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Good working knowledge of UNIX/LINUX, including system-level commands, shell scripting, and programming. General knowledge of web page design and maintenance, including HTML and JavaScript. Knowledge of client-side tools.  Full understanding of how to deploy, trouble-shoot (including starting/stopping) Java-based programs.  Ability to work in a collaborative computing environment to maintain existing software servers.  Ability to write and document shell scripts and compiled code that is used for data processing, including understanding different file input/output formats.  Ability to work effectively within a collaborative research group. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with web design software and/or with mark-up languages including DHTML, XML, XSLT, and/or CSS, web-browsing tools, data base development and/or management, data server implementation and data product development in an Apache HTTP and Tomcat servlet environment. Working knowledge of scripting languages including PHP, Perl, python, and/or JavaScript. Working knowledge of scientific visualizations including Matlab, GrADS, GMT, IDL, Ferret, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or equivalent software packages. Experience with scientific programming including FORTRAN, C, C++, Java or equivalent. Working knowledge of web-based database applications. Real-time data management experience. Experience with UNIX-based systems administration. Working knowledge of terminology and concepts of earth science data (ocean and/or atmosphere).
