Job Summary
 
 

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Area Reserve System (NARS) Program, located in Lihue, Kauai.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,200/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Manages the field crew of Hono O Na Pali Natural Area Reserve Seabird Mitigation Project with input from the Hono O Na Pali Seabird Mitigation Project Coordinator and the Hawai‘i Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Kauai Natural Area Reserve System (NARS) Program Manager.  Implements and oversees various field methodologies employed for invasive vertebrate control in rugged field conditions for the Hono O Na Pali Seabird Mitigation Project Coordinator.  Duties also include monitoring for the presence of cats, rats, barn owls, and feral pigs and monitoring the breeding success of nesting seabirds.  Maps species locations and records control and monitoring work, worker hours, and materials usage.  Records detailed field data and spatial information and inputs data into Global Positioning System (GPS) and computers.  Supervises five (2-5) Hono O Na Pali Seabird Mitigation Predator Control Assistants as well as other staff and volunteers as needed.  Prepares progress reports and data summaries.  Collects and analyzes technical field data.  Ensures that field operations follow and adhere to appropriate safety and operation policies/guidelines.  Represents DOFAW and the Kauai Natural Area Reserves Program at statewide and professional meetings. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, or Environmental Science with basic/related biology courses.  (Bachelor’s Degree in a non-related field with two (2) years of experience managing natural resources in Hawai‘i related specifically to predator control may substitute for Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, or Environmental Science).  EXPERIENCE:  At least three (3) years of work experience in the field of Natural Resources Management with specific emphasis on biological resources.  At least two (2) of these years must include work related specifically to predator control and/or wildlife trapping.  Experience needs to be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, and non-profit organization in the appropriate field.  Must have at least one (1) year of prior experience supervising paid staff and attendance in supervisory training programs.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species.  Knowledge of alien predator behavior and biology and understanding accepted principles and practices of predator control.  Knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology.  Demonstrated knowledge of safe use of firearms and wildlife traps.  Ability to use compass, map, and GPS hand-held units for navigation and data recording.  Ability to safely and effectively use various actions and calibers of firearms as well as clean and maintain them.  Ability to input field data into a computer, analyze field data using database and spreadsheet programs, and prepare reports.  Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.  Ability to lead small groups in remote field settings.  Demonstrated ability to euthanize trapped animals humanely.  Basic mechanical and carpentry proficiency.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or State of Hawai‘i Hunter Safety Program firearms certification and legally possess and use firearms within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.  Must possess the American Red Cross certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certification following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire.  As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days.  Ability to hike up to twelve (12) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous field work experience with emphasis on invasive vertebrate trapping and control with a land management agency or a county, state, or federal program in Hawai‘i.  Previous experience monitoring endangered Hawaiian seabirds.  Experience using remote cameras to monitor wildlife.  Experience working in and around helicopters.  Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and animals, and non-native plants.  Mechanic, fabrication, and carpentry skills are highly desirable.
